CONFLICTING MODERNITIES IN SOVIET ARMENIAN ARCHITECTURE

Two new sessions of the seminar “Soviet Modernisms. Stories of Appropriation and Engagement” curated by Boris Chukhovich on the diversity of Soviet modernisms will take place at the Triennale di Milano, in the venue of the exhibition “Tashkent Modernism. Index”, commissioned by ACDF. We will look at the evolution of ideas of the late Modern Movement in Armenia and Georgia in the 1960s-1980s.

The first session will be animated by Ruben Arevshatyan, Director of the Institute for Contemporary Art in Yerevan.
His lecture – CONFLICTING MODERNITIES IN SOVIET ARMENIAN ARCHITECTURE (case of Yerevan) – is dedicated to the evolution of the Armenian modern architecture in XX century.

The speakers will also talk about their experiences in the preservation of contemporary architecture on example of their theoretical and practical projects on “Writers Resort” on Lake Sevan and “Palace of Chess” in Tbilisi, carried out as part of the Getty Institute program “Keeping it modern”.
